SHORT BIO

Juan-Tomás Vázquez has a PhD in Earth Sciences from the Complutense University (Madrid) obtained through its Doctoral Thesis titled "Structure of the Northern Margin of the Alboran Sea". He was part of the Marine Geology Department of the Spanish Geological Survey (Instituto Geológico y Minero de España, IGME, 1986-1993) and he was professor at Cádiz University (Marine Geology and Tectonics) from 1993 to 2007. In October 2007 he joined the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (Instituto Español de Oceanografía, IEO) as Researcher at the Oceanographic Center of Malaga. He has specialized in the study of several geological active processes of continental margins, ocean basins and seamounts from different types of seismic reflection profiles and multi-beam bathymetric data. His research focuses on submarine active tectonics and other active geological processes as volcanism and fluid emissions, diapirs, submarine canyons, mass flow processes and tsunami triggering mechanisms. He has developed this activity in several marine areas of Iberia, Canary Islands and the Antarctic.
